The Denver Broncos signed linebacker Durrell Nchami to their practice squad yesterday. The move was made after rookie defensive lineman P.J. Mustipher was signed by the New Orleans Saints to their active roster.
In my opinion, losing Mustipher as a developmental prospect is a hit to Denver’s defensive line—a unit that will definitely need retooling and upgrading this coming offseason. I felt that Mustipher was a player who could have certainly earned playing time as a role player last offseason. Best of luck to him with the Saints.
Undrafted out of the University of Maryland, Nchami was a reserve player for most of his time with at Maryland and missed time with multiple injuries over the course of his collegiate career. Finally healthy in his sixth-year senior season on the outside rushing the passer, he was able to make his mark. In thirteen games, he amassed 20 tackles, 6 of them for loss, and 3 sacks. In 29 games over five seasons, he had 51 total tackles, 17.5 for loss, 9 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles.
It’s hard to envision Nchami getting called up to the active roster this season considering the success the Broncos have had with their young pass rushers. However, adding another developmental prospect to the mix isn’t a bad idea, especially when you consider Baron Browning and Jonathon Cooper are free agents after the 2024 season.
