CJ Stokes, a sophomore running back for the Michigan Wolverines, has entered the transfer portal, he announced on social media Monday morning.

The second-year running back out of South Carolina played an important role down the stretch last season when Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards were both out with injuries. He was especially important in the Illinois game — the game Corum got injured — as he ran 11 times. He ran for 273 yards and one touchdown as a true freshman.

But his playing time diminished this year due to injury and subsequently falling down the depth chart. He only played in two games — the first two games — in 2023 and ran four times for eight yards.

Michigan has plenty of depth in the running back room. Of course, Corum will be gone after this season, but there is a chance Edwards comes back, as he hasn’t had a stellar junior season by any means. The Wolverines will also have Ben Hall and Cole Cabana, as well as incoming true freshmen Jordan Marshall and Micah Ka’apana, in 2024. And if they want one more guy in the room, they can always look to the portal to take in a running back as well.

We wish Stokes nothing but the very best wherever he winds up next.
