Texas football got its NCAA Transfer Portal class started over the weekend after landing a commitment on Dec. 16 from the former Houston Cougars sophomore wide receiver Matthew Golden. Texas got a portal commitment from one of its two visitors among the transfer targets on campus last weekend with Golden.

Two other portal targets that head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Longhorns have hosted for visits in the last two weekends are the former Clemson Tigers junior safety Andrew Mukuba and UTSA Roadrunners redshirt sophomore edge rusher Trey Moore. Mukuba visited Texas officially last weekend.

Andrew Mukuba and Trey Moore are Texas football’s top two remaining portal priorities

And Moore made the short trip from San Antonio to Austin for his visit to Texas on the weekend of Dec. 9.

Mukuba and Moore both have Texas among their top schools in their respective portal recruitments. In fact, there’s a very strong case to be made that Texas is the top option in the portal for both Mukuba and Moore.

Texas was already considered the favorite in the race to land Mukuba’s commitment in the portal heading into the visit last weekend. From what we’ve heard in the last couple of days, Texas continues to be in a great spot to land Mukuba at some point this week.

The Longhorns were also considered an early favorite in Moore’s portal recruitment heading into his visit to Texas a couple of weekends ago. Moore still had scheduled visits to see the Ohio State Buckeyes and Alabama Crimson Tide in the last week, giving Texas some competition recently in this portal recruitment.

Texas still in the driver seat with UTSA EDGE transfer Trey Moore

But the early returns from Moore’s visit to Alabama last week indicate that Texas is still in a good spot to land his commitment.

Orangebloods reported on Dec. 18 (subscriber content) that Texas is “confident” in its positioning with Moore a little over one week after his visit to Austin concluded.

Moore is Texas’s top priority in the portal at the EDGE position. He could be an immediate impact player at a position co-DC/LB coach Pete Kwiatkowski and the Longhorns are looking to upgrade via the transfer portal in 2024.

There won’t be many better edge rushers with the level of production and proven experience that Moore brings in this portal cycle. Moore is a high-level pass rusher and a big-time disruptor at EDGE/outside linebacker.

Moore led the American Athletic Conference in sacks (14) and won the AAC Defensive Player of the Year honors this season.

Alabama remains Texas’s biggest competition to get Moore out of the portal heading into the offseason. But most recent indicators point to Texas still holding the pole position in this portal recruitment.
