Darren Moore could look to sign an attacker who rejected a new deal at Sheffield Wednesday last summer.
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing joined Sheffield Wednesday on a free transfer in November 2021, having spent a brief period on trial.
The winger netted two goals and provided three assists in 19 games for the Owls, before his contract expired the following summer.
Darren Moore previously shared his appreciation for the Guatemala international during his time at Hillsborough, telling The Star: “He needs that consistency.
“The minute I met him this season and he came into training with us, I had no hesitation in him signing for us.
“I felt he’d give us a wonderful out and what we’re seeing now is somebody that is playing with a smile on his face, he’s well settled here and he’s found a home here.
“He’s playing football in a team that is playing to his strengths and it was great to see him get on the score sheet.
“They all want to feel the back of the net and it’s great for him. I’m pleased the supporters have seen such a good, solid performance from him and what he can do.
“As the games go on, he’ll get stronger.”
After failing to win promotion to the Championship, Darren Moore was eager to tie Mendez-Laing down to a new deal, but he rejected the opportunity and instead linked up with Derby County.
The 31-year-old has lit up League One recently, grabbing five goals and four assists in the Rams’ last 10 games in the third tier.
Mendez-Laing’s form has attracted a lot of interest as of late, with BBC journalist Alex Howell claiming that Darren Moore’s Huddersfield are joined by Hull City and Birmingham City in monitoring the forward.
Mendez-Laing’s contract is up next summer and could be available on the cheap next month, or another free transfer in six months time.
A January switch to Huddersfield could see Mendez-Laing competing against his former club for a place in the Championship, with the Terriers currently sat 21st in the table – nine points above Sheffield Wednesday.
Would Nathaniel Mendez-Laing have helped Sheffield Wednesday this season?
Nathaniel Mendez-Laing is smashing it in League One this season, but he hasn’t hit those heights in the Championship for a long time.
The winger hadn’t scored more than three league goals since the 2017/18 season before his move to Pride Park, netting a total of 13 goals in 95 games in the Championship.
Mendez-Laing could have been a solid squad player for a season in the second tier, but he surely wouldn’t be the star man that the Owls are missing to keep their league status secure.
