Sheffield Wednesday look set to offload Tyreeq Bakinson in the January transfer window.
Tyreeq Bakinson joined Sheffield Wednesday from Bristol City in July 2022, going onto make 26 appearances as they won promotion back to the Championship.
The midfielder has struggled for minutes this term though, having not made a league start for the Owls since the defeat to West Brom in October.
Bakinson was left out of the match-day squad all together in Danny Rohl‘s first nine games in charge, while he has only made two cameo appearances since the German was appointed.
The 25-year-old did feature in yesterday’s win over Preston North End, though that now looks set to be his final appearance for the Yorkshire outfit.
Fabrizio Romano has this morning reported that Standard Liege are now in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Bakinson, with the Luton Town academy graduate said to be in ‘high demand’ ahead of the January window.
Bakinson’s contract at Hillsborough is set to expire next summer and would be available for free, while it always seemed very unlikely that his deal would be renewed.
It’s unclear how much the Belgian side will cough up for Bakinson as they look to move up the league table, with Standard Liege currently sat in ninth place – nine points from the play-off spots.
Should Sheffield Wednesday sell Tyreeq Bakinson?
Given that Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Tyreeq Bakinson is in ‘high demand’ ahead of the transfer window, it suggests that Standard Liege may face tough competition for the midfielder.
From Sheffield Wednesday’s point of view, it certainly seems like a sensible option though.
The Owls could look to bolster their squad next month and offload some of the dead wood, with Danny Rohl likely to be eager to put his own look on the struggling squad.
With Bakinson entering the final six months of his contract, it makes complete sense to cash in on him before he can leave for free.
Sheffield Wednesday won’t want to help out any Championship rivals though, so it could be the perfect move if he is to arrive in Belgium in the coming days or weeks.
Sheffield Wednesday may look to add other midfielders to their squad in the mean-time, with Momo Diaby hoping to be registered after spending recent months on the sidelines.
Rohl currently has Barry Bannan, George Byers, Will Vaulks and Jeff Hendrick to choose from.
