Danny Rohl has provided an update on Sheffield Wednesday striker Lee Gregory.

Lee Gregory joined Sheffield Wednesday from Stoke City in 2021 and quickly made a very positive impact in League One, netting 17 goals and providing five assists in his first campaign.

The Owls narrowly missed out on promotion, but Gregory continued his form and contributed a further eleven goals when the club finally earned their return to the Championship.

Despite Sheffield Wednesday opting to extend the forward’s contract, he has since fallen down the pecking order at Hillsborough.

Gregory was a regular under Xisco Munoz, but managed only two starts under Danny Rohl and has been left out of the match-day squad all together on eleven occasions.

Having played only one minute of Championship football since October, the 35-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away this month.

It was reported in December that Gregory has attracted interest from a number of EFL clubs, with Wrexham one side said to be eager to snap up the veteran.

Rohl has stayed fairly tight-lipped on the situation, but has now spoken out on Gregory’s future.

Speaking to The Star, the German coach said: “He is back in training, he has not trained for two weeks. I have seen a Lee Gregory who runs a lot, he fights a lot, he gave good signs. He knows the situation and honestly he has done an outstanding job in the last months.

“Even if he hasn’t played, he has been very focussed, he has been in the right direction and he has supported all the players. This is a fantastic sign for me and I have learned a lot about his character. If you are disappointed sometimes you can be down, but he has been focussed with lots of energy.”

Will Lee Gregory leave this month?

“We will see what is the best for him, what he wants to do and this decision we will make as a club in the next weeks,” Röhl continued. “Lee, the club, I know the situation and it is about what we can do together to make a good decision. He is still a part of the team, he is in the meetings, he has trained well. All the things you need from a professional in a team he has done, he has been respectful.

“Behind the player is a human, there is a human side and this is what we have to understand as a manager. We will bring all this together and you will see how we make the decision in the next weeks.”

Lee Gregory is set to turn 36 years old this year and there is no denying that his time at Sheffield Wednesday has long been over.

With his contract set to expire in the summer, it will be great business if The Owls can offload him for a fee in the January window.

The arrival of Ike Ugbo makes Gregory’s future at the club even more bleak, while Dejphon Chansiri is thought to be still hopeful of spending big money on a new goalscorer in the coming weeks.
