Sheffield Wednesday have now missed on on a number of transfer targets, and there could be more that we’re unaware of.
Of the ones we know, Sheffield Wednesday have showed an interest in all of Conor Coventry and Darko Gyabi, with attackers Myles Peart-Harris and Mika Biereth now joining that list, after the pair joined Portsmouth and Sturm Graz respectively.
And one name who previously looked set to join that list was Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden; the Owls’ summer target is now back at Newcastle after seeing his loan spell with Standard Liege cut short, and he’s been linked with Sheffield Wednesday and several others.
One of the other teams linked is Preston. It looked as though a temporary move to Deepdale was moving ahead after it was revealed that Hayden had held talks with Ryan Lowe’ side, but the 28-year-old midfielder remains at St James’ Park.
Issac Hayden in transfer limbo at Newcastle United
The situation regarding Hayden seems like a tricky one; he’s nowhere near the first-team at Newcastle but he seems no closer to a temporary exit than he was this time last week.
But an emerging report from Lancashire Evening Post has discussed Preston’s interest in Hayden.
Their report says that Hayden to Deepdale ‘would be a relatively straightforward deal to do’ with both parties apparently keen on the move.
But Hayden is currently viewed as a replacement option should Preston lose one of their central midfielders between now and deadline day, potentially handing Sheffield Wednesday a lifeline where Hayden is regarded.
The same report however also revealed that Lowe has a good relationship with Hayden’s agent.
Hayden remains a good option for Sheffield Wednesday
It’s clear that Sheffield Wednesday want a new central midfielder after links to Coventry and Gyabi, with The Star even stating recently that Danny Rohl wants a ‘mobile’ no.6 before deadline day.
Hayden is just that and more; he’s a hardened central midfielder who can put in the crunching tackles and provide aerial cover, but he also boasts a huge degree of technical ability too, making him a very well-rounded player and potentially shrewd option for the Owls.
And now with Preston still mulling over a potential swoop for Hayden, if not looking unlikely to make a move at all, it gives Rohl a chance to bring him to Hillsborough in this final week of the transfer blow.
Dejphon Chansiri is now back in the country and that signals towards a real push in the transfer market before February 1st, though whether or not the Owls have enough resources and enough time to bring in all they need remains to be seen.
Up next for Sheffield Wednesday is an FA Cup fourth round at home to Coventry City on Friday night.
