Sheffield Wednesday may be forced to offload some key players before deadline day.

Sheffield Wednesday have already struggled with the EFL’s 25-man squad rule this season, with Marvin Johnson being added to the side back in October.

Momo Diaby was unregistered after enduring a serious injury at the start of his time at Hillsborough, before he was brought back in in time for the win over Hull City on New Year’s Day.

John Buckley and Tyreeq Bakinson were also removed following their departures this month, before they were replaced by loanee arrivals James Beadle and Ike Ugbo.

Sheffield Wednesday could still look to add new signings to their ranks in the final days of the window, though they are fully aware that they won’t be able to register every single senior player on their books.

With a number of key players already linked with the exit door in January, Danny Rohl has spoken out about the potential departures and how the club could deal with their overflowing squad.

Speaking to The Star, Rohl said: “To leave, it means at first that I speak with my players and my players know what I have in my mind.

“They know also that if they are part of my team for the next months that they are part of my team and I will push them, support them and make them better. Now is about finding the best solution for everybody. Hopefully we can find that and make everybody happy.

“It is important for my players. I told them where there is opportunity to play more (somewhere else) then we can speak about this, if not then we will keep them and we will go together into a tough, tough second half of the season.”

Who could Sheffield Wednesday move on this month?

Two key players who have already been linked with a move away this month include Marvin Johnson and Josh Windass – both of whom have proven themselves to be really important players under Danny Rohl.

Johnson has been linked with a surprise move to Ipswich Town, while Windass is reportedly a target for the MLS.

Sheffield Wednesday really can’t afford to lose either of them and should be trying their best to keep hold of all the key men who can contribute to their battle against relegation.

However, there are still a number of players who could be a real waste if they are to take up one of the spots in the 25-man squad.

Michael Smith has heavily been linked with a move away but it seems Sheffield Wednesday’s demands are proving to be difficult for Derby County, but they could really benefit by getting him off the books.

Meanwhile, the likes of Lee Gregory and Reece James could gift them some much-needed cash and space in the team.

Injured Juan Gelgado could also be left out, while Jeff Hendrick and Ashley Fletcher are two loanees who are yet to make an impact at Hillsborough.
