Louisville’s offense will have a new look in Year 2 under football coach Jeff Brohm.
The unit lost 8 of 11 regular starters, including quarterback Jack Plummer, leading rusher Jawhar Jordan and leading receiver Jamari Thrash. Wide receiver Chris Bell is the only full-time starting skill player expected to return. The other two returning starters are left guard Michael Gonzalez and right guard Austin Collins.
Collins became the starter midway through the season after Renato Brown, who started at right guard, sustained a season-ending knee injury ahead of U of L’s Week 7 game at Pitt.
The Cardinals have only three starters to replace on defense. Two of those vacant spots are in the secondary, which was without much depth. Louisville addressed the issue by signing seven defensive backs from the NCAA transfer portal, all of whom will compete for starting roles this offseason. The starting safety position left vacant by Cam Kelly likely will be filled by MJ Griffin, who is expected to be back from a lower leg injury this fall.
