The Seattle Seahawks are getting a whole lot younger at the head coaching position.
After 73-year-old Pete Carroll stepped down as head coach of the organization after 14 years, the Seahawks are ushering in a new era with youth. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, Seattle is hiring former Baltimore Ravens defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald as their new head coach.
Macdonald, 36, now becomes the youngest head coach in the NFL.
Macdonald takes the crown for youngest NFL head coach from Sean McVay, who held that title for seven years after joining the Rams in 2017. That’ll certainly add some playful fun to the NFC West division rivalry with Los Angeles.
As for Macdonald, he got his NFL start with Baltimore as a coaching intern in 2014, working his way up to defensive assistant, defensive backs coach, and linebackers coach before leaving to become Michigan’s defensive coordinator in 2021.
During the 2022 NFL season, Macdonald returned as the defensive coordinator for the Ravens, but he dealt with major injuries on the defensive side of the ball that derailed the team’s season. This season, Macdonald coached that group to become the league’s No. 1 ranked defense en route to an AFC Championship Game appearance.
