LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Former Louisville men’s basketball standout and current NBA star Donovan Mitchell has been named to the 2024 NBA All-Star Game as a reserve player, the league announced Thursday.
This is Mitchell’s fifth time being named an NBA All-Star, all coming in consecutive seasons. He the only former Cardinal to be ever named a starter for the NBA’s annual exhibition after being named one in last year’s All-Star Game.
The 6-foot-1, 215-pound shooting guard, currently in his second year with the Cleveland Cavaliers, is having yet another highly productive season. His 28.2 points per game is just barely behind his career-best 28.3 points set last season, while his 6.4 assists and 5.5 rebounds per game are both career-highs. He has helped lead the Cavs to a 29-16 overall record for the No. 4 seed in the East.
The Greenwich, Conn. native has experienced nothing but personal success from day one in the NBA, and has vaulted into certified superstardom. In 449 career games, Mitchell is averaging 24.9 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.6 assists per game.
He is currently in year four of a five-year, $195 million designated rookie max extension that was signed after the 2020 NBA Playoffs. After spending the first five years of his professional career with the Utah Jazz, he was traded to Cleveland ahead of the 2022-23 season.
Mitchell was drafted with the No. 13 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft by the Nuggets, only to be traded to the Jazz on draft night. As a sophomore at Louisville, Mitchell averaged 15.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists en route to being named a 2016-17 First Team All-ACC selection.
