The San Antonio Spurs have been enjoying the rookie season of French phenom Victor Wembanyama, and one way or another, the future seems to be bright for them.

Wembanyama has been making strides over the last several weeks, but he has had very little support, as they have the worst record in the Western Conference.

Still, the Spurs didn’t stand idle prior to the NBA’s trade deadline, and per Legion Hoops, they talked to the Atlanta Hawks about landing star guard Trae Young.

In his six seasons in the NBA, Young has made the All-Star team three times, including this season, and he’s currently averaging 27.0 points and 10.9 assists a game.

He has received some criticism for his shot selection, decision-making, and propensity to commit turnovers, but he is shooting 37.3 percent from 3-point range this season, which is significantly higher than his 33.5 percent from that distance last season.

There have been many rumors that the Hawks will eventually get rid of Young and/or fellow starting guard Dejounte Murray, and at age 25, Young’s timeline isn’t that far off the timeline of the 20-year-old Wembanyama.

Wembanyama is currently averaging 20.4 points, 10.1 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and a league-high 3.2 blocked shots per game, and he put up 24.0 points a contest in the month of January.

He has gradually picked up his shooting accuracy, and he is putting up these numbers despite being on something of a minutes restriction (he’s averaging 28.4 minutes a game).

At this point, perhaps the best play for the Spurs is to continue to lose as many games as possible, get as high a pick as possible in this June’s draft, and pick up a potential co-star for Wembanyama there.
