South Georgia running back JP Powell talks about his Saturday visit, landing the offer from the Seminoles, and more.

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State offered 2025 athlete JP Powell of Colquitt (Ga.) Miller County on Saturday while he was on campus for their second spring scrimmage. Powell clarified to Noles247 that the offer is for him to come to FSU as a running back. He has known FSU running backs coach David ‘YAC’ Johnson for some time, as the position coach has dropped in on Miller County when allowable. He shared what the two spoke about on Saturday during his visit to Tallahassee.

“Coach YAC told me that he knew I could play once he saw my film. That stars and rankings do not matter to him,” Powell said. “I have so much respect for Coach YAC. He is one of the best on and off the field. I’ve had so many people tell me some many good things about him. Much respect.”

The visit also allowed him, and his mother, to get some time around head coach Mike Norvell.

“It was awesome. Coach Norvell is a high energy coach and he was like that all day in the building and outside at practice. I love it,” Powell said.

A central part of the visit on Saturday was the opportunity to check out FSU’s second spring scrimmage. Norvell mentioned that running backs such as Lawrance Toafili and Jaylin Lucas turned in good plays on the day. Powell was impressed by what he saw inside Doak Campbell Stadium.

“The team brought a ton of energy on both sides of the ball,” Powell said. “They really competed on every play. What I liked best was the picking each teammate up and supporting each other. It was an absolutely amazing.”

Now that the Seminoles have offered the 5-foot-10, 185-pound back, where do they stand in his recruitment?

“FSU is an offer I’ve wanted for a long time. I grew up watching and pulling for FSU,” Powell said. “One of my mentors Kez McCorvey is one of the greats at FSU. It’s still surreal right now.”

He has already made plans to get back to Tallahassee again this month.

“I have plans to return to the Spring Showcase on April 20,” Powell said.

Powell has a dozen offers. FSU joins a list that includes Boston College, Cincinnati, Coastal Carolina, Georgia Tech, USF, Vanderbilt, and more. The Yellow Jackets are expected to host him for an official visit and the Commodores were working on scheduling a date as well.

Powell is not yet ranked by 247Sports.com or the 247Sports.com Composite Recruiting Rankings.

In addition to running back, he also plays wide receiver and defensive back for Miller County, while also appearing on special teams as a return man. He had 84 carries for 611 yards and eight rushing touchdowns. He averaged 7.2 yards per carry. On defense, he had 54 tackles, three interceptions, and a fumble recovery. He had five kick returns for 132 yards (26.4 yards per return). He had two punt returns for 63 yards.
