Ayden Greene named Virginia Tech’s biggest surprise of the offseason for the Hokies football team.

One of the many things we know about the Virginia Tech football team heading into the 2024 season is that they have depth at multiple positions. One of those positions is wide receiver. Quarterback Kyron Drones will have several talented targets to throw to in the fall as the Hokies got a lot of retainment with their wide receivers.

Returning for another season are Jaylin Lane, Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Ali Jennings. Out of that group, Jennings might be the one to break out as he lasted just one game last season before suffering an ankle injury against Purdue in Week 2 on Virginia Tech’s opening drive. His one game against his former team, Old Dominion, in Week 1 was a promising start to his career in Blacksburg.

During spring practices, according to Kolby Crawford of 247Sports, one wide receiver had stood out and made the case to be a part of the Hokies offense in 2024.

Ayden Greene was Virginia Tech’s biggest standout in spring practices

In an article by Brad Crawford of 247Sports “Biggest Standouts for every Top 25 team this offseason,” Crawford noted that Geene stuck out filling in for an injured Gosnell in practices.

“Despite Virginia Tech returning its four top wide receivers for the fall, Ayden Greene had a great spring filling in for injured Stephen Gosnell and should have locked himself into a large role this fall in a crowded room”

Last season, Greene played in 12 of the 13 Virginia Tech games and had just five receptions for 56 yards, with his biggest game coming in Week 3 at Rutgers when he had 24 receiving yards in the Hokies 35-16 loss in New Jersey. In Virginia Tech’s Military Bowl win over Tulane, he had one catch for 19 yards.

A three-star recruit out of Knoxville, Tennessee, Greene should be a player to watch this summer in camp. He has the skill set and speed to be a playmaker on the outside for Drones and offensive coordinator Tyler Bowen. Drones and Bhayshul Tuten form a tough running game for the Hokies and add in the depth and talent at wide receiver, the Virginia Tech offense should have little problem moving the ball and putting up points.
