The Virginia Tech Hokies received a surprise on Saturday. Miami linebacker/defensive back Kaleb Spencer entered the NCAA transfer portal less than one month ago and, on Saturday, announced on X that he was committing to the Hokies.

The Hokies had one full scholarship available, and it went to Spencer, a Virginia native. The 6-foot-2, 200-pound Spencer appeared in 11 games for the Hurricanes as a true freshman last season, and he was credited with one tackle.

Spencer is from Gloucester, Virginia, and played at Life Christian Academy in Colonial Heights. He was a high three-star recruit in the 2023 recruiting class. According to 247Sports, Spencer was the No. 13 overall player in Virginia in 2023 and the No. 673 overall player.

Spencer is listed as a linebacker, but can also play safety. He looks like an ideal candidate to play the STAR role in head coach Brent Pry’s defense. Spencer joins defensive lineman Khurtiss Perry (Alabama) and quarterback Collin Schlee (UCLA) as newcomers via the spring portal window. The Hokies added four players in December.

We are unsure of where Spencer fits in 2024, but it’s a smart move for Pry to not only bring Virginia natives home but also to increase the overall talent level, which both Perry and Spencer do.

Welcome home, Kaleb.
