The veteran lefthander is back! José Cuas optioned as Cubs activate Drew Smyly.

The veteran lefthander is back.

The Chicago Cubs today activated left-handed pitcher Drew Smyly from the 15-day injured list and optioned right-handed pitcher José Cuas to Triple-A Iowa.

Smyly was placed on the injured list April 23 (retroactive to April 22) with a right hip impingement. This season the lefthander has posted a 4.97 ERA (seven earned runs in 12⅔ innings) in nine games, all in relief, for the Cubs. Smyly made one rehab start with High-A South Bend, throwing three perfect innings with five strikeouts.

Cuas has split the 2024 campaign between Chicago and the I-Cubs, pitching in nine games out of the bullpen for the Cubs, posting a 7.43 ERA (11 earned runs in 13⅓ innings), and six for Iowa, with a 4.32 ERA (four earned runs in 8⅓ innings).

Smyly will be available out of the bullpen for tonight’s game against the Cardinals in St. Louis. Today’s game preview will post at 4 p.m. CT.
