Panther’s emotional first phone call after debut news.

Who’s cutting onions?

Penrith has released the footage of an emotional phone call between debutant Preston Riki and his grandmother, just moments after he learned he would be making his NRL debut against the Dragons in round 13.

The back-rower has toiled away for a number of years in the lower grades at the Panthers, but will step up this weekend during the State of Origin period.

Riki was elevated to the top 30 squad earlier this season and after plenty of hard work, the back-rower will finally get his shot on Saturday night.

The club posted the footage of Riki’s video call with his grandmother on Wednesday, with the forward shedding plenty of tears when he broke the news.

“I’ve got some news … I’m gonna be making my debut this week,” he said.

“I’m playing in the main team this week. I thought I’d call you and let you know. I’ve just been waiting long time. You have to try and watch [the game].”

Riki grew up in New Zealand and had previously been plying his trade with the Warriors in their reserve grade side, before moving across to Australia two years ago.

His teammates erupted when head coach Ivan Cleary announced Riki would be making his debut against St George Illawarra, swarming the popular squad member.

His upgraded deal at the foot of the mountains will see him remain at the club until the end of 2025, with chief executive Matt Cameron praising Riki for his dedication.

“On behalf of everyone at Panthers, I’d like to congratulate Preston on being elevated to the NRL squad and for re-signing with the club,” he said in a statement in April.

“Despite having a couple of injury setbacks over the past couple of years, Preston has shown his character through persistence, hard work and dedication to the Panthers.

“We are pleased to see Preston remain in Panthers colours and we’re looking forward to seeing his continued career progression.”

Trent Toelau will also make his NRL debut for the Panthers in this weekend’s fixture.
