Snoop Dogg made waves during Game 5 of the Western Conference Finals between the Dallas Mavericks and the Minnesota Timberwolves due to what seemed like an exchange with Luka Doncic. In the third quarter, Doncic seemingly said to Snoop, “Who’s crying mother******?” However, Snoop clarified on the WHOO’S House Podcast that the comment wasn’t aimed at him.
Even as Luka Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks face a 1-3 deficit in the NBA Finals, their performance in the previous series was noteworthy. Going up against the top-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves, the Mavericks were considered the underdogs in the Western Conference.
Doncic and the Mavericks dominated the series, winning four out of five games, including the decisive match held at Target Center in Minneapolis. In that final game, Luka demolished the Timberwolves defense with 36 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists.
However, he also engaged in some spirited trash talk with the crowd, showcasing his competitive edge. This caught the eye of hip-hop legend Snoop Dogg, among others in attendance.
“I was in town, I had a show the next night. I’m a basketball fan, I’ve never seen Luka play live, I wanna see them get down. Kyrie is a friend of mine, just wanna see good basketball, and Anthony Edwards is a bad m**********r,” Snoop said while appearing on the podcast.
“Luka wasn’t talking to me, it was somebody that was talking s**t… When Luka took the lead, he was like ‘Who’s crying now m**********r?’ I was like this n***a a dog. He gets down, I like his get down ‘cause he meets the press,” Mr. Dogg continued.
That person probably learned the hard way that provoking Doncic never ends well, and the Slovenian likely did leave some Timberwolves fans in tears that night. Doncic and the Mavericks eviscerated the home team, surging to a lead of up to 36 points at one point. Ultimately winning, 124-103, securing their spot in the NBA Finals.
Since his debut in 2018, Luka has never shied away from the spotlight, readily embracing the role of superstar in Dallas as he inherited the mantle from Dirk Nowitzki.
Doncic’s versatile playing style allows him to dominate games consistently. His size enables him to overpower smaller defenders while his diverse skill set allows him to exploit any matchup. He possesses exceptional ball-handling skills, often maneuvering past defenders effortlessly and making difficult shots with remarkable accuracy.
The Mavericks found themselves in a 3-0 deficit against the Boston Celtics, drawing attention to Doncic’s defensive struggles and frequent complaints. However, their narrative changed slightly with a convincing win in Game 4 against the Celtics.
Despite the widespread belief that the series is nearly decided, the players must maintain belief in their ability to stage a turnaround. Doncic spoke candidly about the crucial factor for the Mavericks’ success in Game 5.
“Yeah we talk about it,” Doncic said, via NBA TV. “I think the most important thing to show is we believe. I think we showed in Game 4. If we wouldn’t believe, we probably wouldn’t have won that game, so I think obviously it’s easy to talk about it, but showing is another thing.”
Snoop concluded the conversation by sharing his perspective on the Mavericks’ potential comeback in the Finals series against the Celtics, with the Mavericks trailing 1-3 after losing the initial three games. He expressed, “It’s a long series, you never know,” although the Mavericks would need to make history to secure only their second NBA Championship.
