‘No doubt I’m getting the job’: Queensland assistant coach finally opens up on Eels pursuit after brief interview with some officials.

Queensland assistant coach Josh Hannay confirmed he is still in the running for the vacant head coaching role at the Parramatta Eels.

Hannay emerged as a contender for the spot alongside Jason Ryles and Dean Young, who are currently signed with the Storm and Dragons respectively as assistants.

Ex-South Sydney coach Jason Demetriou has reportedly been overlooked for the role, while interim coach Trent Barrett remains unlikely to stay at the helm.

Speaking with 2GB’s Continuous Call Team, Hannay revealed he will meet again with Parramatta officials following game two of the Origin series on Wednesday night.

“To be really honest, there’s not a lot to say on the situation,” he said.

“I’ll catch up with them post-Origin. Given the schedule I’ve had the last month, it has been difficult to find the time. We’ll catch up after game two and see where it all lands.

“I think in my own mind, there’s no doubt about my readiness. I’ve stated that publicly, so we will see where it all lands. There’s not a lot from my end to tell, it’s an ongoing process and we’ll take a step forward after game two.”

Hannay played 153 NRL games at the Cronulla Sharks and the North Queensland Cowboys, including two matches in the Queensland jersey.

The 44-year-old began his coaching career with Souths Logan in the Hostplus Cup, before serving as an interim coach at the Cowboys in 2020 after Paul Green’s exit.

Hannay also worked as an interim coach at the Sharks in 2021 following the departure of John Morris and has remained at the club under Craig Fitzgibbon.

Parramatta has not won a premiership since 1986, but that has not deterred Hannay away from taking the opportunity.
