Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglou has heaped praise on ‘elite’ attacker Son Heung-min whilst hailing his leadership.
Ange Postecoglou thinks that Son Heung-min is a truly ‘outstanding player’ and can thrive in the new Tottenham Hotspur side.
Postecoglou is looking to learn about his Tottenham squad having arrived from Celtic earlier in the summer.
The Australian knows all about Son though, telling Football London that he has known the Spurs ace for ‘a long time’ now.
Postecoglou noted that he hasn’t really learnt anything new about Son but did call him an ‘outstanding player’.
Postecoglou believes that Son is truly ‘elite’ and loves his fit in this new Tottenham side given his goal threat from wide areas.
The new Spurs boss wants to play a very attack-minded brand of football at Tottenham, which seems ideal for Son.
We saw Jota and Liel Abada make major impacts from the flanks for Postecoglou’s Celtic, so Son could do the same.
Postecoglou admitted that he loves the leadership ability Son provides and thinks he has ‘enormous respect’ in the Tottenham squad.
“Not from playing,” said Postecoglou when asked if he had learnt anything new about Son. “I know Sonny really well, I’ve known him for a long time. He’s an outstanding player. Especially the way I like teams to play with wingers who are a goal threat, he’s elite. He’s as good as anyone because he has that ability to play wide and play one on one. The fact that he scores goals is just priceless.”
“I’m looking forward to working with him. He’s another one that I think shows real leadership qualities. I look at him and he’s pretty much a conduit for the whole squad. He mixes in all groups. I don’t think it’s just because he’s popular. What he’s done in the game he has a certain standing in the game. It’s good to see that influence on the group. He’s got a massive influence on the group which doesn’t surprise me because I know he’s a leader for his nation and he’s been an icon for his nation for a long time. He carries that really well for someone who has been in the spotlight for that long. He has enormous respect among the players,” he added
Son Heung-min looking to get back to his best with Tottenham
Son has been simply sensational ever since joining Tottenham from Bayer Leverkusen in a £22million deal way back in 2015.
That was certainly money well spent with Son becoming one of the top attacking players in Europe.
Last season was a tricky one though as Son struggled to find his best form under Antonio Conte.
After sharing the Premier League Golden Boot with Mohamed Salah for the 2021-22 season, Son managed just 10 goals and six assists in 36 Premier League games last term.
Son did at least end the season in better form, recording four goals in the last nine games of the campaign.
Now 31, Son needs to prove that last season was just a blip and that he isn’t coming to the end of his powers as a top Premier League player.
Postecoglou’s style of play seems better for Son than Conte’s approach and the Spurs boss is clearly expecting big things.
