Top247 McKinney (Texas) linebacker Riley Pettijohn will make his announcement on July 6 live with 247Sports
One of the top players in the state of Texas will announce his decision with 247Sports on Saturday, July 6 at 11 AM Central. Top247 McKinney (Texas) Linebacker Riley Pettijohn will pick from his final group of Texas, Texas A&M, Ohio State and USC at a live ceremony with his family and friends present.
At 6-foot-1.5, 215 pounds, Pettijohn is ranked as the No. 5 linebacker in the country and No. 10 overall prospect in Texas, according to 247Sports.
Pettijohn accumulated over 30 offers in the past two years after flashing as a sophomore at McKinney. Pettijohn narrowed his list to several schools and took official visits to Ohio State (May 31), USC (June 7), Texas (June 14) and Texas A&M (June 21). Texas leads on the 247Sports Crystal Ball, but current intel is pointing elsewhere for his decision.
As a junior, Pettijohn accounted for 125 tackles, 8 tackles for loss, 3 sacks and 1 interception. The 247Sports Scouting Report on Pettijohn reads as follows:
“Athletic volume tackler who can fit multiple off-ball linebacker roles in varying schemes. Well-developed build with a stout, athletic base. Early on, looked like a candidate to ultimately play off the edge, but now clearly belongs as a traditional linebacker who exhibits broad pursuit range with excellent verified athleticism to bolster his long-term projection. Ran a wind-legal 10.77 100 and wind-aided 10.98 as a junior, while also high jumping 5-10. Multiple examples of explosive vertical and broad jump metrics in combine settings. Averaged double-digit tackles per game as a junior. Displays chase-down athleticism and closing speed to the degree of compensating for occasional less-than-ideal angles. Knack for effectively playing around blocks rather than through them. May need to take a more urgent approach in the hole at the next level. Comfortable dropping into zone. Possesses requisite athleticism to become a competent man defender of backs and tight ends with continued technical development. Strong football pedigree to accompany excellent multi-sport athletic profile on the track. Could provide immediate dividends on special teams. Possesses the physical and athletic traits to become a multi-year high-major starter who could develop into a coveted NFL Draft candidate.”
