The transfer portal continues to be one of the more controversial aspects of college sports, and Duke head coach Jon Scheyer only added to that.
When making an appearance on The Devils Den: A Duke Athletics Podcast, the Duke head coach pulled back the curtain on the transfer portal and how it was used against the Blue Devils. Based on his comments, it sounds like NCAA rules were violated, but transfer portal etiquette hasn’t really been enforced.
Scheyer touched on the players who left the program, saying that all seven of them were contacted by other programs during the season.
“There’s tampering all the time,” Scheyer said of the state of college basketball. “I could tell you the seven guys that we had transfer, all seven of them were contacted throughout the season.”
Some of Duke’s notable transfer departures include former five-star Sean Stewart (Ohio State), third-team All-ACC point guard Jeremy Roach (Baylor), and former five-star TJ Power (Virginia).
Luckily for Duke, they brought in the No. 22 transfer portal class, complemented by the No. 1 recruiting class headlined by five-star phenom Cooper Flagg who has turned heads while training with the Olympic team. The Blue Devils’ recruiting class has six players, all of which rank in the top 40 in the country, with five ranking in the top 20.
As for the portal tampering, the NCAA has shown little-to-no signs of being able to do anything, so putting a stop to it doesn’t seem to be on the horizon.
