D’Margio Wright-Phillips has sealed his move after an impressive loan spell in Belgium
D’Margio Wright-Phillips is returning to sign for Beerschot on a permanent basis after helping the club secure promotion to the Belgian top flight while on loan in the second half of last season.
The 22-year-old forward, the son of Shaun Wright-Phillips and grandson of Ian Wright, has ended a three-and-a-half-year stay on Stoke City’s books, having joined from the Manchester City academy.
He was given a taste of the first team by Michael O’Neill but fell down the pecking order under Alex Neil and spent time on loan at Northampton Town in 2023 before joining Beerschot in February. He linked up with Stoke youth graduate Thibaud Verlinden under manager Dirk Kuyt and his four goals helped secure the Challenger Pro League title.
Beerschot are now in a hurry to secure a work permit, and Wright-Phillips said: “I think it was clear that I felt very good here. I was able to show my worth again here. That’s why I wanted to stay at the club and take a step higher together. I am sure I can still learn a lot here and grow as a player and as a person.
“It was also important for me to continue working with coach Dirk Kuyt and the staff who were there last season. I learned a lot in that short period. I now want to continue that process. I look forward to giving everything for this club in the coming seasons.”
Beerschot start their season on Saturday, July 27, against OH Leuven. Kuyt, the former Liverpool forward, said: “We are happy that we have been able to permanently commit D’Margio to us. He proved his worth last season and scored some crucial goals in the Challenger Pro League title race. He can also play in multiple positions and thus strengthens our core. We look forward to growing with him to the next level.”
