Journalist Damien Barrett is convinced Collingwood could be the frontrunners to land out-of-favour Essendon forward Jake Stringer in the upcoming trade period.

Stringer triggered a clause in his contract during the 2024 season, whereby he would automatically be offered a one-year extension with the Bombers.

However, reports continue to swirl that the veteran is unhappy with the deal and has clashed with coach Brad Scott.

It comes after captain Zach Merrett reportedly defended Stringer and defender Jayden Laverde in a meeting with Scott last week.

It has left Stringer and his management searching for a new home, reportedly already shopping him around at Sydney and Geelong.

And according to Barrett, there are two other clubs who are in desperate need of a forward.

“The interest will come from the Sydney Swans once their finals series is completed,” he said on Nine’s Footy Classified on Wednesday night.

“Collingwood, I fully expect to explore the possibilities around it.

“I wouldn’t be surprised if Melbourne (also enquire). They need a forward.”

But Matthew Lloyd isn’t so sure Stringer is consistent enough to keep his feet at a destination club like the Swans or Pies.

“What’s funny is, the Bombers are desperate for a forward, but they obviously see enough where they go, ‘you know what, we’re probably best to move Jake Stringer on’,” he said.

“I think they get frustrated with his lack of consistency, from one week to the next, one game to the next.

“His best is great, but his bad is bad.”

The fallout follows Eddie McGuire expressing his disappointment at the way the club has handled these contract discussions.

“I’m disappointed it got out. That’s the sign of a divided club, I reckon,” he said on Nine’s Eddie and Jimmy podcast on Monday.

The AFL trade period kicks off in early October.
