Crystal Palace made an interesting move ahead of allowing one of their players to leave on deadline day. After three years, Odsonne Edouard was allowed to depart the club, albeit on a loan deal, joining Leicester City for the season.

Edouard was signed from Celtic for just under £15million and he has gone on to score 18 times in 95 league appearances. But while there have been flashes, the Frenchman has not always convinced, and he will now look to rediscover his form with the newly promoted Foxes.

The move was not a big surprise, especially with Palace’s £30million signing of Eddie Nketiah from Arsenal, and many expected it to be the end of Edouard at Selhurst Park, but it may not be.

According to Alan Nixon via his Patreon Palace actually handed Edouard a new long-term deal before sending him out on loan. He said: “Leicester City loanee Odsonne Edouard signed a new deal at Crystal Palace before he left … for THREE YEARS. The shock contract was sorted before the Frenchman moved to the Foxes but protects Palace next summer when he comes back.”

Edouard’s contract was set to expire in 2025, and the new deal ensures Palace are not at risk of losing him on a free transfer new summer.

Edouard’s fresh start with Leicester

Edouard will be desperate to rediscover his form at the King Power Stadium after departing on deadline day. He told Leicester’s club site upon arrival: “I’m very happy to be here and I’m looking forward to starting with my new team-mates. We’ll try to win games and to score some goals. I’m a striker so it’s what everyone expects from me. I’ll try to do my best to try to help the team. “[Deadline day] was a very long day, so I’m happy to be here. As a striker, it’s exciting to see the ball a lot, to receive a lot of balls to play forward. I’m looking forward to this and I hope I can link up with the boys.”

He added: “It’s three years that I’ve been here (in England) now, so I know the league,” he added. “Now I hope I can bring my game to the team and, like I say, try to score a lot of goals. It was always a difficult game. There were some nice games. I know Leicester very well because I used to follow them a lot. I have some friends who played there, it’s a team I like to watch. I know virtually all the players because I like to watch football. I know plenty of the team already.”
