Tottenham Hotspur are keen on signing the Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba.

The 24-year-old Burkina Faso international has been linked with the move to the north London club in recent weeks.

Fabrizio Romano has now revealed to Give Me Sport that Tottenham are still in contact with people close to the player and the deal could depend on the departure of Harry Kane.

The departure of the England international will give Tottenham significant resources to spend in the transfer market and they could bring in the Bundesliga defender then. Without the departure of Kane, the move could be complicated because of Tapsoba’s £45 million valuation.

Romano said: “Tottenham are still in contact with people close to the player at Bayer Leverkusen. And so, I think it could depend also on Harry Kane.

“In the case Harry Kane leaves, and they have big money to invest in the market, Tapsoba could be realistic, otherwise it could be difficult.”

The defender is likely to cost a substantial amount of money and it remains to be seen how the situation develops. Signing a quality defender should be the top priority for Tottenham this summer.

They conceded 63 goals in the league last season and they will have to improve defensively if they want to get back into the Champions League once again.

Tapsoba has proven himself in the Bundesliga and he is certainly good enough to make his mark in the Premier League as well. He could be the ideal partner for Cristian Romero at the heart of Tottenham’s defence next season.

Tapsoba will add pace, defensive organisation and athleticism to the Tottenham defence. He is only 24 and he is likely to improve with coaching and experience. He could develop into a key player for the London club in the coming seasons.
