Richmond has snapped up exciting forward Jasper Alger with its eighth selection, No. 58 overall, after trading a future fourth round selection with Gold Coast.
Alger, who is one of the youngest players in the Draft, will be a Richmond player for close to a month before his 18th birthday. He had a strong season playing for Oakleigh Chargers and Caulfield Grammar this year.
The 17-year-old from Warragul was also a solid contributor across four games playing for Vic Country, including a three-goal haul against South Australia, and two against Western Australia.
Alger averaged 10.8 disposals and 2.7 tackles for the Chargers, and across all competitions booted 48 goals from 17 games this season.
Richmond Recruiting Officer, Sam Cousens said that the 183cm Alger was a difficult matchup for opposition defenders.
“Jasper is a dangerous forward as he can get you both in the air and at ground level,” Cousens said.
“His athletic profile is outstanding, and he has terrific goal sense, which he proved across all competitions he played in this year.
“We feel Jasper has significant growth left in his game and can see him playing further up the ground in the future, which is exciting.”
Cousens added that the Alger family were all passionate Tigers supporters, adding to their excitement for tonight’s selection.
“We are thrilled to welcome Jasper and his family to Tigerland,” he said.
