Leicester City are “in the race” to sign Benfica winger Tiago Gouveia on loan, it has been claimed.

Gouveia scored five goals and assisted another six in 27 appearances last season, while on loan at fellow top flight team Estoril. The season before that, he scored 10 in 25 for Benfica B in the second division.

But Benfica have this summer signed Angel Di Maria on a free transfer, pushing Gouveia down the pecking order at the Portuguese club. Now he is attracting attention from clubs in England, with Leicester said to be one of the teams in the race.

That’s according to the Telegraph’s Mike McGrath, who says Leicester are joined by Southampton, Hull, Watford and West Brom in the “race” for the left-sided forward.

McGrath tweeted: “Benfica forward Tiago Gouveia, 22, has attracted interest from several clubs in the Championship for a season-long loan. Leicester, Southampton, Hull, Watford and West Brom are among teams in the race to sign the Portugal Under-21 international. Was on loan at Estoril last season.”

City have already signed Stephy Mavididi from Montpellier to play on the left-hand side, while Wanya Marcal-Madivadua proved he is an able deputy against Burton in the Carabao Cup this week.
