Callum Wilson has been speaking about Raheem Sterling after the Chelsea No.7 delivered a strong performance against West Ham.
The Newcastle No.9 was discussing the England international alongside Michail Antonio on The Footballer’s Football Podcast.
Well, the 31-year-old was very complimentary about the 28-year-old after Antonio commented on his display at the London Stadium last Sunday.
Wilson said: “He is unbelievable, isn’t he? In training with him, he is one of the sharpest players, him and Marcus (Rashford) are so, so sharp at changing directions it’s incredible.”
The Newcastle striker has – of course – trained with Sterling on international duty for England, so he has been able to witness just how talented the Kingston-born forward is up close.
It was great to see the £50m man back to his best in east London on Sunday, driving at defenders and causing major panic amongst the backline.
In truth, we almost forgot Sterling was capable of delivering these electric moments out on the pitch, after his hugely underwhelming debut campaign at Chelsea.
The £350,000-a-week man scored just six goals in 28 Premier League appearances last season.
Last chance saloon for Raheem Sterling at Chelsea
In our view, the 2023/24 campaign is Sterling’s last chance to cement himself at Chelsea.
Todd Boehly has already signed a number of young forwards who are surely eager to take the England international’s place under Mauricio Pochettino.
Brazilian talents such as Angelo Gabriel and Deivid Washington have arrived at Chelsea this summer, while a lot of money was spent on Mykhailo Mudryk and Noni Madueke before them.
With Chelsea on the lookout for another attacker – Michael Olise came close to joining, but chose to stay at Crystal Palace – competition for Sterling is likely to increase.
Therefore, the Chelsea No.7 really needs to step up and play like he did against West Ham on a weekly basis this season, as there are many waiting to take his spot.
