Mason Holgate could be in line to follow Conor Coady and Yerry Mina out of the Everton exit door this summer, according to Kevin Campbell.
After the Wolves man was allowed to return to Molineux at the end of his loan, and the Colombian’s contract was left to expire, Paul Joyce suggested in The Times that Holgate and teammate Ben Godfrey could yet go too during the window as Sean Dyche revamps his squad.
With Holgate only making nine appearances in all competitions this season after eight years at the club former captain Campbell feels he is a candidate to be moved on to bring in some cash, but expects Godfrey, who missed a big chunk of the campaign with a broken leg but was never a regular starter, to be kept around for his versatility.
“I think Holgate might go,” the Sky Sports pundit exclusively told Goodison News.
“I’m not so sure on the other lad because he’s so versatile, he can play right-back, left-back, centre-back. I think he can even play midfield.
“So I think he might be a key piece in the revamp of the defence.
“But I just think Holgate’s been there a little while now and it might come to the stage where he goes to bring some money in to revamp it a little bit.”
Dyche’s propensity to use Godfrey as a makeshift full-back late in the season wasn’t overly successful, but he is probably the better player when compared to Holgate.
But if it is a matter of boosting the Everton transfer budget the former Norwich man would likely command a bigger fee, so his place may not be entirely certain.
The manager is set to welcome Jarrad Branthwaite back to the squad but is sure to want new options added, so with two prominent first-team defenders gone it wouldn’t be a shock to see a lesser-spotted one go too to make room.
