Club agree to let Newcastle sign £110k-a-week player for free, but he has said no.

Just when you think it is going to be an extremely boring transfer deadline day for Newcastle United, they go and make a move for Hugo Lloris.

In the dying hours of the window, the Magpies reportedly made a move to bring the Frenchman to St James’ Park.

The goalkeeper has no future at Spurs. He lost the captaincy this summer, while Ange Postecoglu signed Guglielmo Vicario as his replacement.

A move away from Tottenham looked certain for Lloris, and surprisingly it was Newcastle who made a last gasp move to sign the World Cup winner.

However, he is not on his way to St James’ Park.

Hugo Lloris turns down Newcastle transfer

According to L’Equipe, Tottenham had agreed to let Lloris leave the club for free. However, Lloris has turned down the move to Newcastle.

The report states that Eddie Howe wanted a top class goalkeeper to provide Nick Pope with competition. Despite that, the Newcastle boss still planned to use Lloris as his second choice stopper.

The 36-year-old has now said no to the move, and L’Equipe add that he is now expected to stay at Tottenham.

It was a dramatic deadline day twist on Tyneside, but one that ends with the original state of play. Newcastle have made four senior signings this summer, and will not be adding a fifth.

News of a move for Lloris came as a huge shock, and most Toon fans will not be too disappointed to see him reject the move. It was not too long ago that he was taken off at half time at St James’ Park as Newcastle beat Spurs 6-1.

Lloris, who earns £110,000-a-week at Tottenham, is a goalkeeper whose stock has dropped massively, and he is not a player who Newcastle need.

Fans wanted a surprise on deadline day, but this was perhaps not what they were expecting. Regardless, a move to Tyneside is not on the horizon for Lloris.
