Former footballer Gordon McQueen passes away at the age of 70.
His family expressed the hope that, in addition to making many unforgettable football experiences, he will be remembered most for his moral integrity. “Our home was usually crowded with loved ones, friends, and football fans, just as it was during his final months as he valiantly fought what turned out to be a very harsh battle against dementia.
“The disease may have claimed him too soon, but there is no doubt that he lived life to the fullest. He was the pinnacle of entertainment, the life and soul of every celebration, and the most enjoyable father anyone could have wished for.”
McQueen began playing professionally for the Scottish team St. Mirren before moving to England. When he signed with Man United for 495,000 pounds (now $626,000), he was the most expensive player in Britain.
He won the FA Cup with Manchester United and the English league championship with Leeds. He represented Scotland in 30 international games as well.
Following his playing days, McQueen spent a short time coaching Middlesbrough and St. Mirren as well as managing Scottish club Airdrieonians.
