Joey Barton has suggested that former professional players should be on VAR panels after the madness that ensued during Liverpool’s clash against Tottenham.
Taking to Twitter, the former Premier League midfielder claimed that people who have never played the beautiful game at a top-tier level shouldn’t be allowed to make such decisions in the VAR room.
Liverpool had a goal incorrectly disallowed against Tottenham this weekend as Luis Diaz was called offside despite being a good few inches onside.
With the Reds going on to lose 2-1, VAR played a crucial and disastrous role in Liverpool missing out on points against Tottenham.
And whilst former professionals might be one way to remedy such an incredible mistake, the issue of bias will immediately come into question if a decision like this was made.
The right VAR lessons need to be taken from Tottenham – Liverpool
VAR is rightly under the spotlight after the injustice Liverpool were served against Tottenham, yet the right lessons have to be taken from such a mental moment.
Having former professionals on the VAR panel could be one idea, but such a move might open another can of worms in the form of biases and decisions being left to untrained eyes.
As such, the right lessons have to be learned, and Liverpool will hope that this is the last ridiculous incident that occurs to them via the hands of VAR.
