Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Danny Murphy believes Eric Dier has ‘got to cut ties’ with the Premier League giants after falling out of favour under Ange Postecoglou.
There are certainly shades of Harry Maguire’s situation at Manchester United as Eric Dier enters end-game at Tottenham Hotspur.
Another England international losing his place under a coach who prefers more technically-capable, mobile options in the centre of his defence, the arrival of the outstanding Micky van de Ven and the shift to a back-four limiting Dier’s game time in North London.
The long-serving defender hasn’t even played a single minute under Postecoglou in 2022/23.
Eric Dier will leave Tottenham Hotspur in 2024
“He has got himself in a situation. Obviously, with a change in manger, sometimes you find yourself out of favour, and you’ve got to cut your ties,” Murphy tells talkSPORT (11 October, 12.50pm).
“You’ve got to go.”
Dier reportedly turned his nose up at potential late-summer moves to Fulham and Bournemouth. But, with his contract expiring in 2024, the one-time Everton man is destined to depart over the next 10 months, whether he wants to or not (talkSPORT).
Murphy, meanwhile, believes that – at the age of just 29 – Dier still has plenty to offer.
Out of favour under Ange Postecoglou
“He is a talented lad,” says the ex-Liverpool man. “He can play at centre-half and in central midfield, and he will do someone a job because he’s a good player. He’s just not the most mobile
“(Dier) has got versatility, he’s experienced. You can probably get him quite cheap as well (in January). There is a lot of clubs who will want him.”
Dier again failed to get off the bench last time out, even as a ten-man Spurs side were battling to hold onto a narrow lead away to a fired-up and physical Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.
Fellow centre-half Van den Ven scored the only goal of the game, further enhancing his own reputation as Dier’s diminishes.
