Jose Mourinho wants AS Roma to sign Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier
AS Roma are apparently considering a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Eric Dier, who is in two minds over signing a new contract.
The situation is simple. Dier leaves as a free agent in 2024 and can negotiate a pre-agreement with a foreign club starting in January. Sporting CP’s interest in re-signing the Englishman is well-known at this point.
According to Calciomercato.com, Roma are interested in Dier at the behest of Jose Mourinho, who managed him during his stint at Spurs. It could be a good move for the 29-year-old to consider.
He is getting no playing time under Ange Postecoglou and Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven are irreplaceable in the Australian-Greek’s starting XI. Even Davinson Sanchez is getting minutes ahead of Dier.
The England international has been a huge player for us since his move from Sporting CP in 2014. But the fact is that Tottenham can do better than him, and they did by signing the 22-year-old Dutchman from VfL Wolfsburg.
There is one more aspect that people seem to be forgetting about. Gareth Southgate may keep selecting Harry Maguire despite lack of minutes at Manchester United but that same luxury may not be afforded to Dier.
The 2024 UEFA Euros is near. If Dier wants to play in Germany, his playing time at the club level will be important. That is something to think about.
For Tottenham, if they don’t want him, then selling him for a fee in January would be the best-case scenario. But it would be a surprise if European teams agree to it knowing they can sign him on a free this summer.
