Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl takes charge of his first game this weekend.
Sheffield Wednesday head to Vicarage Road to face Watford in the Championship on Saturday, marking the start of the Rohl era.
The 34-year-old German coach is an exciting appointment, but he has a huge task in turning around Wednesday’s fortunes after a winless start to the 2023/24 campaign.
The Owls sit rock bottom of the Championship table following a disastrous start under Xisco Munoz, and although Rohl seems like a much better coach, it’s still difficult to see where Wednesday pick up points this season.
Wednesday’s attacking woes…
Sheffield Wednesday have scored just five goals in the league this season – the lowest of anyone in the division.
Last season’s main scorers; Michael Smith, Lee Gregory, and Josh Windass are yet to kick on this season, with summer signing Ashley Fletcher having been poor too.
Arguably the biggest challenge for Rohl then is getting these misfiring strikers firing again. But Rohl might also consider a fresh face up top; Bailey Cadamarteri.
The 18-year-old is someone who Owls fans are really excited about. He’s a prolific name for the U18s and a regular feature for the U21s too, and he was recently training with the Owls’ first-team under Munoz, who said of the Leeds-born striker:
“But he’s one of the players that I have in my head. He’s one of the players we have in our academy with good potential – for me he’s a big talent for the future, and just now we need to know how we can reduce the process for him.”
Cadamarteri would certainly give some much-needed energy to an otherwise slow front-line. And it would mark the first time in a while that we’ve seen a positive youngster progress through the ranks, which is a theme that Rohl will surely want to embed at the club.
Expect Cadamarteri to be in Rohl’s plans going forward and whilst he perhaps won’t come in straight away, we could no doubt, and probably should see Cadamarteri come into contention if Wednesday’s attacking woes continue.
