Liverpool enter race for one of Manchester United’s top defensive targets and could make move next summer.

Liverpool have reportedly entered the race for Manchester United’s defensive target Goncalo Inacio ahead of a move next summer.

Erik ten Hag’s Manchester United have seemingly earmarked Goncalo Inacio, 22, as one of their best options to upgrade in the centre of their defence next summer.

Raphael Varane’s injury problems and the uncertainty over Harry Maguire’s future means the Red Devils are seemingly in the market for another defensive addition to play alongside Lisandro Martinez when he is fit.

Well, it seems that Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool are set to enter the race for the highly-rated Portuguese defender, which would be a huge blow for the Red Devils.

Liverpool’s interest in Inacio

According to a report from 90min, Liverpool have sent scouts to Portugal to keep an eye on the young defender to see how he progresses, and he has allegedly been added to a list of targets for next summer.

Liverpool have also seemingly been impressed by what they have seen from the defender and could be ready to make a move for him. His recent performance in the win against Bosnia & Herzegovina is said to have impressed scouts the most.

United have been credited with an interest in the Portuguese defender, with The Sun claiming that the Red Devils could make a move for the Sporting Lisbon defender in January.

United’s alternative defensive targets

According to the same report from 90min, Portugal defender Antonio Silva and Italy’s Giorgio Scalvini are alternative names on the list at Old Trafford ahead of a move for a defender.

Either way, it is seemingly clear United are in desperate need of a new defender next summer. One they can rely on for 40-50 games a season and one who is on the younger side and can grow with the team.

The names mentioned certainly fit that criteria and United seem to be targeting the right type of defenders to continue the next stage of the Ten Hag revolution at Old Trafford.
