Wests Tigers officials have been shocked by news that one of their most promising young players has been charged with murdering a notorious underworld figure.
Local junior Masei Tavui has been charged with the murder of Dejan “Danny the Serb” Radulovic in Sydney’s inner west in July.
The 19-year-old was arrested and charged with one count of murder at Liverpool Police Station on Tuesday afternoon.
Radulovic, who was well known to police for several years, was allegedly stabbed and shot in Balmain following an altercation with two men.
Police raided a home in Austral on Tuesday, seizing several items of clothing and leading Tavui away in handcuffs.
He was denied bail when he appeared at Liverpool Local Court on Tuesday afternoon.
The matter has been adjourned to December 12 when he will appear at the Downing Centre.
Tigers officials have a high opinion of the football ability of Tavui, who played in the SG Ball competition as a back-rower this year.
“He can play, no doubt about it, and we are shocked and saddened to hear what has happened,” a Tigers source told Wide World of Sports.
“But he is still innocent at this stage and will have his day in court.
“Until then it would be inappropriate to say any more and the club won’t be commenting.”
