West Ham United coach made mistake in selling Italian striker, “should have been Antonio”.

West Ham had a busy summer transfer window, with plenty of movement in both directions at the London Stadium club.

In terms of exits, the decision of captain fantastic Declan Rice to join London rivals Arsenal unsurprisingly dominated the headlines.

But perhaps one sale that has gone under the radar is that of striker Gianluca Scamacca, who left for Atalanta after just one season in East London.

The Italian certainly failed to live up to expectation in claret and blue following his big-money move from Sassuolo, with Scamacca scoring just eight goals from his 27 matches in all competitions. A swift exit followed, with the striker quickly putting his Hammers nightmare behind him back in Serie A.

The 24-year-old has scored four goals from his seven league games for his new club, a figure that already surpasses his three Premier League goals from 16 matches.

In contrast, current Hammers striker Michail Antonio has scored just twice from his 10 league games this season. The Jamaican international kept Scamacca out of David Moyes’s starting XI more often than not last time out. But did the boss let the wrong player go?

As per Sky Sports (20 July), West Ham were in “very early” talks to sell Antonio to Saudi Arabian club Al-Ettifaq, and were open to his exit back then.

Obviously he has stayed at the London Stadium, but given his form and indeed that of Scamacca, an argument could be made that the wrong striker was allowed to leave the Hammers in the summer.
