Danny Rohl has put a significant “new challenge” in front of the Sheffield Wednesday stalwart.

Sheffield Wednesday vice-captain Liam Palmer is now facing a new battle at Hillsborough. That’s according to The Star journalist Alex Miller who has been discussing the Owls performer.

It’s not been a season to remember so far for Palmer. His beloved Wednesday are rock bottom of the Championship and he’s not really played a part in the 2023/24 campaign.

It’s been a stop-start season for the influential academy graduate at Wednesday. He’s started just five league games and has struggled to pin down a place after undergoing surgery in the summer.

Palmer now facing fresh challenge at Wednesday

Miller has written a piece on Palmer today and in The Star journalist has written some kind words about the Wednesday stalwart. There is no getting away from the fact, however, that the player is facing a mini-challenge.

Palmer hasn’t been in the Wednesday squad for the last two games against Rotherham and Bristol City. Perhaps more worryingly is that he’s yet to kick a ball under Danny Rohl.

Few players in the squad fit the ethos of a Wednesday player quite like Palmer. He’s made 407 appearances for the club and he’s very much one of their own when it comes to the Owls.

As Miller says in his brilliant article, it’s no slight on Palmer at all. Indeed, as the reporter says, nobody will be backing against him to step up to his latest challenge and at 32, he’s far from finished just yet.

Palmer still has a future at Hillsborough

It will be frustrating for the player right now but Palmer will get another crack at Wednesday. Last season he operated at centre-back and right-back, with his versatility likely to come into play this season.

Palmer just needs a chance to show Rohl exactly what he’s capable of. Right now, he’s only got training sessions to do that which is never easy to deliver a true reflection.

The player is far too good to be cast aside for long though. If Palmer keeps his head down and continues to work hard, surely he will be back in the squad in no time.
