According to sources, Penn State-Michigan could be decided before the Big Ten’s Jim Harbaugh ban.

A Big Ten decision on a potential suspension for Michigan football coach Jim Harbaugh could come as early as Friday, according to the latest from ESPN reporter Heather Dinich.

A three-game suspension was mentioned by Dinich in a Friday morning appearance on ESPN’s “Get Up.” She said a decision from the Big Ten Conference is expected today.

“Sources indicate that the Big Ten will give Michigan a response early this afternoon,” Dinich said on Get Up. “Michigan leaves at 1 p.m., they’ll fly mid-afternoon… Last night, Michigan sources indicated to me and my colleague that they had not had any communication with the Big Ten and there still has not been evidence presented to Michigan that Jim Harbaugh knew, orchestrated any of this, or lied.”

“The Big Ten, we’ve learned, has considered the gamut of punishments,” Dinich continued. “Now, we’re hearing this morning, it could be a three-game suspension, which would be significant and it could start this weekend.”

Michigan has been accused of participating in an elaborate system to steal signals from opponents, but the Wolverines have pushed back against those allegations and rallied around Harbaugh and the coaching staff. The university sent a letter to the Big Ten earlier this week threatening how much could unravel about sign-stealing and other unsavory deeds done by other Big Ten football programs in the name of winning.

Harbaugh began the 2022-’23 season serving a three-game suspension handed down by the university as part of an NCAA investigation into possible recruiting violations and misleading NCAA investigators. If indeed another three-game ban is handed down by the Big Ten, Harbaugh will have been suspended for half the Wolverines’ regular season over two different sets of allegations.

Michigan coaches, players and administrators have been ironclad in their support of Harbaugh and the lack of evidence against him in the sign-stealing case. That support could meet a new level of challenges with a possible 11th-hour suspension before Saturday’s top-10 clash in Happy Valley.

The Wolverines are currently 4.5-point favorites to beat Penn State.
