Phoenix Suns guard Bradley Beal was an unfortunate late scratch for last night’s game against the Minnesota Timberwolves- a game in which was highly anticipated due to the expected regular-season debut of the newly formed big-three.
According to coach Frank Vogel, the decision to scratch the former All-NBA stud was nothing more than a precautionary measure, saying:
“About the 60 minute mark when we had to report it. He woke up with some residual tightness in the back this morning. We were hoping it would loosen up by game time. But it did not, so we held him out,” said Vogel.
“They’re working diligently on getting it corrected, getting it right. It’s not gonna be perfect – backs are tricky. So it was unexpected. He had some tightness so it was a good call that he did not play, and they got a good plan to try to get him back in action.”
Beal’s back shouldn’t be a long-term concern according to coach Vogel, but there has to be at least a small amount of concern going forward.
This back issue has lasted well over a month, and depending on who you ask, has been an issue for Beal since last season with the Washington Wizards.
As Vogel said, back injuries are tricky and must be approached carefully. But the fact that Beal was never completely absent from the team’s injury reports even in the three games he played isn’t the best sign.
The Suns are remaining upbeat on the total outlook of the season despite their 5-6 start.
“It’s tough man. Just like I said, nobody wants to miss any games, especially when you’re the best in the game and you want to prove it every night and something’s holding you back,” Devin Booker said.
“So he’s just trying to get right. He’s taking all the steps, he’s in there early every day in his treatment. We’re gonna rally behind him, keep his morale high and make sure he’s in good spirits until we get him back on the court.”
While the ultimate goal for the Suns is hoisting their first Larry O’Brien trophy, getting the big three as much time together possible during the season should be a priority. While this team is likely talented enough to figure things out on-the-fly, the Denver Nuggets are as well-connected as anyone and would be tough to take down without much continuity built up.
While Beal’s long-term health is what’s most important, Suns fans shouldn’t be too concerned as of right now. The unfortunate circumstances may be frustrating, but Booker and Kevin Durant are good enough to put Phoenix in a good position going forward.
