After a disappointing 2022-23 campaign, Liverpool have made big moves in the transfer market already this summer.
Many of their issues last season came in the middle of the field, and investment was needed in midfield to improve their depth and quality.
The disappointing form and availability of Fabinho and Thiago, combined with the departures of James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Naby Keita left Liverpool’s midfield looking thin – but they have already made two signings which most would agree mark an upgrade.
Argentinean World Cup winner Alexis Mac Allister has signed from Brighton, while exciting Hungarian midfielder Domink Szoboszlai has also arrived from RB Leipzig in the past few days.
The latest reports from the UK suggest that they are now leading the race to sign yet another bright midfield prospect in Southampton’s Romeo Lavia.
Liverpool: New midfield acquisition expected
Though last season was one to forget for Southampton, as they were relegated from the Premier League, there was one particularly bright shining light at the base of midfield, with the excellence of 19-year-old Belgian midfielder Romeo Lavia.
With Southampton set for Championship football next season, many of their players are in high demand, and Lavia is the most sought after. He has garnered interest from several of the Premier League’s biggest clubs, including Arsenal, but journalist Jacob Tanswell now believes Liverpool are best primed to sign the young Belgian.
Tanswell – who covers Southampton for sports site The Athletic – spoke to Liverpool fan site Empire of the Kop, and said that he expected Liverpool would be the frontrunners for Lavia’s signature, if they choose to follow through on their interest.
Southampton want a high figure for him. Someone has got to pay around £45m-£50m for Lavia. Who can do that is dependent on all the other targets they get.
Liverpool or Chelsea. I probably think Liverpool, with Jurgen Klopp and with the background [work] they’ve done on him, that probably looks the likely destination.
If Liverpool can acquire Lavia on top of Mac Allister and Szoboszlai, it will mark an enormous investment in midfield, and will raise expectations for a return to the expected level of Jurgen Klopp’s side next season.
It seems as though we could have an entirely new look Liverpool midfield next year, and the signing of Romeo Lavia would makr a move for the future.
