Just over a week ago Salford Red Devils confirmed that star winger Ken Sio would be leaving the club and now the 2021 Super League leading try scorer could be set for an NRL return.

Sio had a brilliant career in England as he split time across Hull KR and Salford but it was at the latter where he truly made his mark, registering 78 tries in 104 games for the Red Devils.

That saw his Super League tally reach 114 in 165 over his seven year spell in England, an incredibly impressive total and one that highlighted why he was one of Super League’s elite wingers.

His talent made Salford’s release of Sio all the more devasting for the club with the winger being released on compassionate grounds meaning he now heads back down under.

He released a statement on his Instagram, explaining: “It’s quite difficult for me to put into words the situation I’ve been dealt with, but I’ll try my best.

“I’ve had to call my time at Salford Red Devils, and believe me it wasn’t a decision I take lightly. But something greater than rugby needed me here at home. I’ve been with the club for 5 seasons having moved here end of December 2018 with my family and it’s been a highlight of my career.”

Sio continued the statement in which he thanked his teammates and all the staff at the club he had called home for the past five years, before rounding off his statement with questions over what is next to come.

He concluded: “I don’t know what’s next or whats to come, but I am grateful to be where I need to be and that’s home.”

It would now appear that there is potential for Sio to make an NRL return, set to star in the league for the first time since 2018 when he played for Newcastle Knights.

During Sio’s NRL career he scored 54 tries in 98 games and he could potentially take that past 100 if reports from The Mole are to be believed.

The renowned journalist has reported that “several clubs” are in the market for an experienced winger and at 33 and with over 250 games to his name, Sio ticks the boxes.

A third NRL stint could well be on the cards for Sio following his return down under, but as per his Instagram post it remains unclear what the future holds for him but importantly he’s in the right place.
