Injuries & Moves: Urías optioned to Triple-A as Mariners stars ruled out for the season.

LATEST NEWS

May 24: INF Luis Urías optioned to Triple-A Tacoma; OF Jonatan Clase recalled
Clase was recalled and added to the ninth spot of the starting lineup in the series opener against the Nationals on Friday night. The Mariners’ No. 10 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, batted. 344 in his last eight appearances with the Rainiers with a 1.104 OPS.

Clase made his Major League debut on April 15 against Cincinnati. He appeared in nine games with the Mariners before being optioned back to Triple-A on April 29.

To make room for the move, Urías was optioned after 34 games for Seattle. He slashed .152/.264/.316 as the right-handed hitter in a platoon split with Josh Rojas at third base.

“We thought it was a good opportunity to give him a chance to restart, go down to Triple-A and get some at-bats and hopefully he gets going because I do think there’s a real productive player still there,” manager Scott Servais said.

May 23: RHP Mike Baumann reports to club; RHP Cody Bolton optioned to Triple-A Tacoma
The newly acquired reliever joined the Mariners in New York and immediately saw action by pitching in the seventh inning of Thursday’s 5-0 loss, during which he walked two of the four batters he faced. Baumann said he was at his apartment in Baltimore when he got the call, then hopped on a quick flight overnight to arrive for the matinee.

“They said, ‘Just go do your thing. Go be yourself and don’t try and do too much,'” Baumann said. “So it was easy to just come in and feel welcomed and feel like part of the team.”

Baumann took the roster spot of Bolton, who was the odd man out within the bullpen’s current construction.

“It’s a good pickup for us,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “Obviously, he had a really good year last year with the Orioles. When he got DFA’d, it was something that I know our people were excited about to see if we could pull off a trade, and we were able to do it.”

May 23: RHP Eduardo Salazar claimed off waivers from Dodgers; LHP Sammy Peralta designated for assignment
Salazar will report to Triple-A Tacoma. In seven starts with Triple-A Oklahoma City this year, he has a 5.61 ERA with 12 walks and 21 strikeouts in 33 2/3 innings. He also made one relief appearance for the big league team, tossing two innings and allowing an unearned run on May 15 at San Francisco.

Peralta carried a 9.24 ERA with eight walks and 12 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings over 12 appearances with Tacoma after being claimed off waivers from the White Sox on April 2.

10-DAY/15-DAY INJURED LIST

LHP Tayler Saucedo (right knee hyperextension)
Expected returnLate May
The MRI that he underwent after suffering the injury on May 7 “was overall positive,” Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said, adding that the injury doesn’t appear as severe as it looked when the lefty went down. Saucedo and the club are now awaiting the soreness to subside before they map out a rehab, but they’re optimistic that he’ll only need the 15-day stint. Saucedo suffered the injury running to cover first base on a ground ball but stumbled awkwardly after stepping on the bag.

60-DAY INJURED LIST

RHP Gregory Santos (right lat strain)
Expected return: July at the earliest
Santos recently joined the Major League team to continue his rehab, shifting from the club’s Spring Training facility in Arizona. He’s been throwing up to 90 feet and with more intensity, but he said on May 17 that he’s still a few weeks away from throwing his first bullpen session, targeting early June. Santos initially experienced shoulder soreness at the start of Spring Training and was set back by a lat strain during a bullpen session while ramping back up. He experienced another setback in early May that prolonged his recovery into the July range.

RHP Matt Brash (right elbow inflammation)
Expected return:
 June 2025
Brash underwent Tommy John surgery on May 8 that ended his 2024 season, three months after initially experiencing soreness during his second bullpen session in Spring Training. Brash had the ulnar collateral ligament in his pitching elbow repaired and a brace installed, which has typically allowed patients to begin physical therapy sooner. That’s why the Mariners are hopeful Brash can return in 12 months, potentially as soon as June 2025. (Last updated: May 10)

RHP Jackson Kowar (right UCL surgery)
Expected return: 2025
Kowar was transferred to the 60-day IL shortly after receiving word that he’ll need to undergo Tommy John surgery, which ended his season before it even began. The former first-round Draft pick was among the leading candidates to win a bullpen spot before suffering the injury in his second Cactus League outing.
