Georgia quarterback commit Ryan Montgomery is out on the West Coast this week as one of the many QBs participating in this year’s Elite 11 Finals event. Montgomery held his own on the opening night of drills, and one of 247Sports’ experts believes he is in a great spot going into Day 2.
247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins named Montgomery as one of the quarterbacks who could assert himself among the top QBs following the first day of drills. Ivins compared the field of quarterbacks to the Tour de France and pointed to Ohio State commit Tavien St. Clair, Texas A&M commit Husan Longstreet, and Alabama commit Keelon Russell as the quarterbacks who have pulled away from the pack.
In Ivins’ opinion, Montgomery is leading the group behind those players and has the ability to close the gap.
“I think it starts, for me, with Ryan Montgomery,” Ivins said on the 247Sports Football Recruiting Podcast. “He’s accurate, an accurate passer. The scouting report on him is I think he’s an elite processor, and you can’t really see that in this type of setting. They’re telling you where to throw the football. You don’t have to make a decision. And I thought his arm was one of the best out here. I would’ve scored him in the top five for today.”
The 6-foot-3, 215-pound Montgomery has been a Georgia commit for just over two months now. He bided his time in recruiting as the Bulldogs weighed their options at quarterback before pulling the trigger on his commitment on April 17. Montgomery chose Georgia over fellow finalists Florida and South Carolina.
Montgomery is set to be a four-year starter at Findlay High School, and through three seasons he’s thrown for 7,584 yards and 89 touchdowns while also rushing for 740 yards and 15 additional scores. His play in 2023 earned him Player of the Year honors from The Toledo Blade and helped him become a finalist for Ohio’s Mr. Football award.
Prior to his junior season, Montgomery won the quarterback accuracy challenge at Under Armour’s Future 50 camp. He followed that up by completing 68.6% of his attempts for 3,377 yards and 38 touchdowns that fall. He also broke a school record with 6 touchdown passes in a single game, surpassing the previous record set by Ben Roethlisberger.
Montgomery’s play helped Findlay win 8 games and make an appearance in the state playoffs.
Montgomery came in at No. 5 in 247Sports’ Elite 11 rankings after day one. He was behind St. Clair, Russell, Longstreet, and Missouri commit Matt Zollers. Montgomery was not included in Elite 11’s Top 11 ranking prior to the pro day and the accuracy challenge workouts.
Ivins also gave Montgomery credit for his mobility but, more importantly, how well he’ll fit in once he gets to Athens this winter.
“You know, he isn’t the most dynamic athlete, but he still runs on Friday nights. He can move the chains with his legs,” Ivins said. “I love the fit at Georgia. To me he’s a guy that you can win with. He’s a high-floor type of prospect. Georgia heading into the upcoming season with Carson Beck, I don’t know how big of a difference there is between Carson Beck coming out of high school and Ryan Montgomery. I just love that fit.”
