The Sun has reported that Brentford have made a £30million bid for Nottingham Forest’s Brennan Johnson with West Ham also interested in the forward.
The 14 June report states that Nottingham Forest are set to turn down the offer with Aston Villa and West Ham also beginning to sniff around their 22-year-old talent.
Forest would be unlikely to let their academy graduate go for a £30million fee after his positive displays last season.
Johnson scored eight goals and provided three assists in 38 league games as the club managed to secure Premier League status in their first season back in England’s top-flight since 1999.
Any offer would have to break the £40million mark in order to tempt the East-Midland’s club into selling.
Johnson is clearly a player many clubs have their eyes on and it is not hard to understand why. Scoring eight league goals in your debut Premier League season as a 22-year-old playing in a struggling team is an impressive achievement.
West Ham would be smart to make a move for the forward and with European football to offer, there is no reason why they wouldn’t be able to attract Johnson to the club over the likes of Aston Villa and Brentford. However, Nottingham Forest only finished two places and points behind the Hammers.
Therefore, Johnson may feel as if he could stick by Forest and push them forward as the main man. His boyhood connection to the club may also make it difficult to lure the forward away at this stage.
This might be a move for further down the line, however, with European football once again next season, and an ageing front line, West Ham will want to bring in some firepower during this transfer window in order to compete on all fronts next year.
