‘£50m’: Chelsea back away from deal for 22-year-old, asking price is too much – journalist.

Journalist Ben Jacobs has claimed that Chelsea have now backed away from a deal to sign Nottingham Forest attacker Brennan Johnson.

He took to his Twitter Space to claim that the Blues believe the fee that will be required to sign him is way higher than what they are wanting to pay for him.

Johnson has been one of the players who has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge late in this summer transfer window.

It is believed that his versatility to play along the frontline is something that originally attracted them to the deal.

They looked to fill this void earlier in the window with the addition of Michael Olise from Crystal Palace. However, he has now agreed a new contract to remain at Selhurst Park.

Despite interest in Johnson, Jacobs has claimed the club are aware that he would actually prefer a move elsewhere in England.

He said: “There is some substance in Bracola but PSG have been the club pushing a little bit more as far as he is concerned and Chelsea have backed off at the moment.

“That’s the same with Johnson too, it was partially about the output and it was also down to the fact that it has been reasonably well known among circles that if Tottenham come in then that will be the player’s choice and in addition to that Chelsea’s valuation of Brennan Johnson is somewhere in the region of £35 million, and it looks like it’s going to be a £50 million deal.”

It remains to be seen whether the Blues make a late move before the window closers later this week.
