Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle United is allegedly close to signing a new contract with the team, ending Liverpool’s hopes of signing a dream midfield target.
The Brazilian was essential to the Magpies finishing fourth last season, which allowed them to qualify for the Champions League. He also assisted Eddie Howe’s team in advancing to the Carabao Cup final.
Guimaraes has played 61 times across all competitions since joining Newcastle for a reported £40 million in January 2022, tallying 10 goals and six assists. Newcastle’s 2023–24 season has gotten off to a rough start with the club dropping three of their first four Premier League games.
In Friday’s 5-1 victory over Bolivia, the 25-year-old made his first start for Brazil on home soil. He participated in Tuesday’s 1-0 triumph in Peru as well.
Due to his accomplishments, Guimaraes has drawn a lot of interest from major European clubs, including Real Madrid, Manchester City, and Chelsea, who are all thought to have been interested in acquiring him in recent transfer windows.
However, TEAMtalk alleged that Liverpool made a last-minute £100 million offer to sign the Brazilian before the summer transfer market shut earlier this month. However, Newcastle turned down the bid for their prized midfielder.
Jurgen Klopp, the manager of Liverpool, is rumored to be a great fan of the 25-year-old. Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, and Waturu Endo were the four midfielders whom Liverpool acquired during the summer transfer window.
Newcastle believes a new contract will be reached “within weeks.”
It should come as no surprise that the Magpies have been attempting to improve and extend Guimaraes’ contract out of a frantic desire to retain his services.
Journalist Graeme Bailey stated on the Talking Transfers podcast: “Bruno Guimaraes is the other interesting one. A new deal has been discussed with him since last summer, and it has been moving forward steadily.
Then, we received information that it had stalled due to an issue from the player’s end. Real Madrid inquired about him in January, and this summer, according to my sources, both Chelsea and Manchester City did the same.
Newcastle, though, is aware that they must honor him. He’s not on the cheap, don’t get me wrong, but they consider him to be one of the Premier League’s top midfielders.
“I don’t think he’s even the highest-paid player at the team right now. They are now continuing with that. Newcastle is optimistic that this will be finished soon, most likely by January.
“I believe that if they allow him to reach January without signing this deal, he already has a contract through 2026, so this is not a problem, but that would mean that the negotiations have been ongoing for well over a year, and you can’t allow that,” said the commentator. There must be a problem there.
