Tragedy as former Newcastle United star Christian Atsu confirmed dead in Turkey

Christian Atsu, a former winger for Newcastle United, was unfortunately discovered dead in the aftermath of the Turkish earthquake. Several national publications and stations ran false reports last week saying the Ghanaian had been located, which were later shown to be false.

The apartment building where the 31-year-old and four of his Hatayspor colleagues were sleeping collapsed, trapping them inside.

Atsu defeated Kasimpasa in the 97th minute to secure three points just hours before the earthquake. His agent, Nana Sechere, shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on social media.

Christian Atsu’s body was tragically found this morning, I must announce to all well-wishers with the heaviest of hearts, read a tweet. “My sincere sympathies are extended to his family and close friends. I’d like to use this chance to express my gratitude for everyone’s prayers and support.

“I ask that everyone would kindly respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time while we make the necessary arrangements.”
